Shawn Mett & his family

2024 Honoree: Shawn Mett

Owner, Island Surf

About our honoree:

In Westhampton Beach, the local surf shop is more than just a surf shop. It is a fabric of our community, a community of people connected through Shawn Mett, the owner of Island Surf. The shop will be celebrating its 26th year in business this May.

Shawn opened Island Surf in 1998 down the alley in back of Ben & Jerry’s. Over the years in the “back alley” Island Surf grew to three storefronts. Then, in 2009, he purchased the building at 49 Sunset Avenue, next to 7-11, in the hopes of pioneering retail up Sunset to expand Main Street’s shopping district. His vision for a surf shop being open year round in a beach community has come to fruition. Shawn is dedicated to keeping Island Surf open everyday.

Shawn embraces the entire community from the young to the elderly and everyone in between. Island Surf is a hub, a gathering spot in the village, where people of all ages and interests feel comfortable stopping in. Through his store, Shawn has mentored many locals and employees. Shawn’s generosity extends to countless donations to local teams and local causes. He is proud to be able to support good work in our community.

Shawn lives in Westhampton with his wife Kirsten, an English teacher at Westhampton Beach High School, and his daughters Ellie and Andie. When not in the shop, Shawn loves to coach his daughters’ teams in HYAL basketball, softball, and volleyball. He has worked as a surf camp instructor at Island Surf camp for the past 25 years, teaching young groms about ocean safety and how to catch their first wave. Shawn has also run the kayak and paddleboard concession at the Westhampton Beach Village Marina for the past five summers.

Shawn is never without a smile and is thrilled to be this year’s honoree. Shawn says, “I am so grateful to be honored by the WHBPAC and to be recognized for my service to the community. The WHBPAC is the epicenter of the arts of our community and shares my vision to elevate the village. I look forward to celebrating with the members of our community, which feels like one big family.”
