Event Summary
Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
Additional Details
Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival — where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize — Brother Outsider has introduced millions of viewers worldwide to the life and work of Bayard Rustin, a visionary activist and strategist who has been described as “the invisible man” and “the unknown hero” of the civil rights movement.
The film has been screened at more than 500 community and campus events, and by a wide range of civil rights, human rights, and LGBTQ organizations — including the NAACP, the Urban League, Amnesty International, and the Human Rights Campaign. It has also been presented at The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis (in June 2025), WorldPride 2025, the United Nations, the Kennedy Center, the EEOC, and the FBI’s national headquarters, and in dozens of countries around the globe, including India, South Africa, Botswana, Poland, Italy, Iceland, and Kazakhstan. In addition, the film has been featured at more than 100 workplaces across the U.S., Europe, and Asia committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging.
In a review of the best historical documentaries of the past decade, Michael Fox of the San Francisco Film Society wrote: “For those who believe that individuals were expunged from history only in the former Soviet Union, Brother Outsider is a mesmerizing eye-opener … The film inspires audiences to carry on Rustin’s worldwide crusade against injustice, discrimination and poverty.” Learn more at www.brotheroutsider.org.
